The latest leg of a successful scheme to give free sports coaching to Cotswold youngsters during the school holidays will take place at half-term next week.
Organised by Cotswold District Council's Sports Access Officer Scott Burry, the initiative is funded by Council Tax paid by second-home owners in the District.
For the past year, children aged five to 15 have been able to try their hand at a wide range of sports at coaching days held across the District during every school holiday.
The events lined up for the Spring half-term are all fun football coaching sessions for girls and boys aged 5 to 16.
Dates and venues are: * Monday, February 13 at Cirencester Arena * Tuesday, February 14 at Bourton Leisure Centre * Wednesday, February 15 at Rendcomb College, near Cirencester. * Thursday, February 16 at Moreton FC * Friday, February 17 at Lechlade recreation ground
Each day begins at 10am and finishes at 3pm and all equipment is provided. Children need only to bring a packed lunch and a 'still' drink (in plastic bottles only). Football boots and shin pads are recommended. Booking is essential (see details below). A one-off registration fee of £5 entitles children to attend as many CDC holiday coaching sessions as they wish.
The coaching scheme is one of a number of community projects for young people and the elderly that Cotswold District Council is supporting from its share of the Second Homes Fund.
Up until April 2004, people with second homes in the District received a 50 per cent discount on their Council Tax bills. Since that date, a change in the law has allowed the Council to cut the discount to 10 per cent. The extra money collected is shared between CDC, Gloucestershire County Council and the police.
Council Leader Cllr Julie Girling said: “The free coaching events are proving to be a great success. It seems appropriate that people who are able to afford a second home in the District and enjoy the facilities provided here should give something back to the local community through this Council Tax scheme.
