The
Cotswolds - Stroud
Stroud
claims the title of the oldest market town in the Cotswolds having
recently celebrated its 700th birthday. Stroud started life as a
hamlet.
As
with other towns in the Cotswolds, Stroud growth during mediaeval
times centered around the wool trade. Stroud is also well known
for its breweries, boat building, quarrying of local limestone,
iron founding and carpet weaving.
The
name Stroud derives from "Strode".
