Museums Team Up To Uncover The Past
The Corinium Museum in Cirencester has been one of three beneficiaries after the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a £25,000 grant to help support young people's understanding of the past.
The Young Roots grant has been awarded in support of a partnership project – between the Corinium Museum, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum and the Holst Birthplace Museum – which aims to develop young people's knowledge and understanding of Gloucestershire's rich creative heritage.
The project, which has been coordinated by Gloucestershire County Council's Museum Development Officer Julie Reynolds, has seen the Corinium Museum work with Cirencester College to research the prehistoric metal smith, while college students have visited the Park Street museum, as well as the National Museum in Wales, for information about the ancient craft of metalworking.
These visits were followed by two workshops, the first at the Peat Moors living history centre, where the students were given practical experience in the Bronze Age smelting process and taught how to produce metal tools and jewellery using ancient techniques.
Emma Stuart, Outreach Officer at the Corinium Museum and the lead on the Prehistoric Metal Smith project said:
“This has been a fantastic experience for the young people involved. They've had a lot of fun, developed knowledge and skills and have had the opportunity to experience experimental archaeology first hand.
“I am sure they will produce a wonderful exhibition from the information gathered to date. Their exhibition panels will be complemented perfectly by the tools and jewellery they created during the hands-on workshops.”
The project will culminate in a temporary exhibition produced by the young people from all three micro-projects at Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery in July and part of it will move to the Corinium Museum later in the year.
