13-year-old Arrested After Vehicle Stopped

At approximately 6.55pm on Wednesday November 8 a member of the public reported a car being driven without lights and unsafely by a young male on the A46 at Stroud.

The member of the public followed the car along the A46 and then on to the A4173 towards Gloucester, where police officers began to follow the vehicle.

The car, which was a blue Vauxhall Zafira, continued into Gloucester where it failed to stop for officers and travelled along Finlay Road, Metz Way and through Kingsholm.

Police continued following the vehicle through the city and out across the Over roundabout and on to the A48 towards the Forest of Dean.

The driver continued on his route into the Forest with police cars attempting to stop the vehicle and the force helicopter was also called in to monitor its progress.

When the vehicle reached Blakeney a stinger device was used to bring the car to a halt and the driver arrested.

A 13-year-old youth from Stroud remains in police custody for questioning.

Inspector Keith Fagan, of the force's Road Policing Unit, said: "This was a difficult situation as we had a very inexperienced driver travelling at speeds of up to 80 mph through busy evening traffic.

"For that reason we kept a suitable distance away from the vehicle and had to think very carefully about the tactics employed to bring the vehicle to a stop, all the while taking into consideration the safety of the driver and other road users.

"The vehicle was brought to a halt successfully and we are very grateful to the members of the public who helped in what was very definitely a team effort."
