North Cotswolds Police - Warning Over Air Weapons

In the run up to Christmas police in the North Cotswolds are warning parents about the pitfalls of allowing children and teenagers to own air weapons.

The warning comes after police received reports that youths were firing an air rifle at the windows of homes in Withington earlier this month.

Three boys, two aged 16 and one aged 15, all from the local area, were given a police reprimand in relation to the complaints.

Officers also seized an air rifle.

Sergeant Martin Jones, of the North Cotswolds Safer Community Team, said parents should think twice before buying air weapons for their children this Christmas.

"There are strict guidelines on the use of air weapons by children under 17 years of age," he said.

"These include only using the weapon on private property and the need for young people using the weapon to be supervised by an adult over the age of 21.

"If your child has an air weapon, or you are considering purchasing one for them, then please ensure you secure it so you know where it is and when it is being used.

"If the police discover a youngster using an air weapon illegally it could lead to their arrest and a criminal record for a firearms offence. This could have a major impact on their future work and travel prospects."
