Christmas Drink Drive Crackdown: 66 Arrests

Police in Gloucestershire have now arrested 66 people for drink driving at the end of the second week of the Christmas and New Year campaign.

A total of 1038 breath tests have been administered on the county's roads, with 66 drivers (six per cent) either failing the test or refusing to give a sample.

The figures are particularly worrying as, already at the half way point in the campaign, the number of drink drivers caught is double the percentage rate of the campaign last year when three per cent of motorists stopped tested positive.

Inspector Charlie Laporte, of the Constabulary's Road Policing Unit, said: "We are continually surprised at the number of people willing to get in their cars and drive after drinking alcohol and never more so than when there has been a lot of publicity about clamp downs such as ours being carried out to catch offenders.

"Drink driving is quite literraly a matter of life and death and, while we take it seriously all year round, at this time of year we devote a lot of time and resources to tackling the problem.

"There is simply no excuse in this day and age for being ignorant to the risks involved. If you drink and drive you are putting your life and that of other innocent road users at risk.

"The simplest thing if you are driving is simply not to drink at all. Book a taxi, take public transport or arrange a lift if you are having a Christmas drink.

"If you are caught drink driving you will get no sympathy from us, we will simply be proud we have taken another reckless individual off the roads and potentially saved a life in every case."
