Threat to Post Offices
A motion was carried by West Oxfordshire District Council deploring the erosion of Post Office provision by the Government.
Letters are being sent to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, the Rt Hon David Cameron MP and Postwatch, the consumer watchdog. They are requesting that, as a matter of urgency, services are retained and reinstated to maintain the viability of post offices to provide vital services to urban and, most crucially, rural communities.
Cllr Jill Dunsmore and Cllr Hilary Biles brought the motion forward at the Council Meeting on Wednesday 10th January.
Following the meeting Cllr Jill Dunsmore said, "Many West Oxfordshire residents rely on the services provided by the post offices and we believe the Post Office network provides a vital service and closures can have a devastating impact for communities, especially in more rural areas.
Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member said, "West Oxfordshire District Council has always supported Post Offices through our rural rates relief scheme and by funding towards the Oxfordshire Village Shops Adviser. Sadly the government doesn't share our view."
Support was given to the motion by councillors across the chamber.
