Dursley Pool Celebrates Reopening

To celebrate its reopening after a 150,000 investment by Stroud District Council, Dursley Pool is holding a special Open Day on Sunday 21st January.

People will notice the new, brighter energy-efficient lighting in the pool area, coupled with new underwater lighting. Behind the scenes, new energy-efficient heating and a new air-handling unit will add to the ambience with the promise of better temperature and humidity control. Meanwhile, the Reception area has had a facelift and enjoys a new floor.

Paralympic hopeful Kate Grey, who lives in Thornbury, will perform the official opening at 11am, accompanied by Cllr Elisabeth Bird, Stroud District Councils Cabinet Member for Leisure. Kate (17) is studying A-levels at Castle school sixth form. She represented GB at the world championships in South Africa last month, winning a silver medal in relay and reaching the finals in breaststroke. She was the 2006 winner of the Disabled Young Person of the year award.

After fun games, competitions and a disco in the Pool, water fitness classes will begin at 12.30pm. Free public swimming begins at 1.30pm, accompanied by competitions and demonstrations by the Pools lifeguards. Other attractions during the day include a barbecue, refreshments, face painting, a treasure hunt and the chance to play on the Batek machine - fun for adults and kids alike. The day will round off with a Dursley Dog Tea party at 4pm, giving under 5's the chance to meet the Pools mascot.

"This is a great chance for people to check out what the Pool has to offer," said Cllr Bird. "It has always been a great facility and is even better following these improvements. For anyone who hasnt been before or needs to shed those Christmas pounds - now is the time!"

Admission on the Open Day is free, as is use of the pool. The Pool closed for its refurbishment at the beginning of December. Any funds raised on the Open Day will be donated to the Cobalt Appeal.
