Tree-mendous success for chipping service

Residents in West Oxfordshire have been praised for taking along more than 800 Christmas trees for recycling at free chipping sessions organised by the District Council.

A total of 12.2 tonnes of wood chippings were collected from approximately 815 real Christmas trees during the sessions at various locations across the District earlier this month - an impressive 2 tonnes more than in January 2006.

All of the chippings will be used to create eco-friendly biomass (energy). According to Goodwood Tree Care, who kindly donated chippers for the service, the tree chippings collected in West Oxfordshire would provide enough energy to heat and light an average home for three months.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Residents deserve praise for helping to achieve this and, in doing so, diverting hundreds of Christmas trees from landfill.
"It is great to see people taking advantage of this free service and I would like to thank Goodwood Tree Care for their support, as well as Council staff who helped to run the sessions. We hope we can continue to build on this success next year."

Sessions were held on 6th January in Charlbury, Eynsham and Woodstock, and on 7th January in Carterton, Chipping Norton and Witney.
