No Cold Calling Area to be Established in Moreton
On Wednesday July 4 part of Moreton-in-Marsh will become the second area in the North Cotswolds to be designated a No Cold Calling zone by local police. The scheme will cover approximately 170 houses in an area including Cotsmore Close, Evenlode Gardens, Evenlode Road and Wellington Road. This area has suffered six distraction burglaries in the past three years. No Cold Calling areas are set up with the agreement of the local residents in a bid to deter distraction burglars - who often pose as salesmen or utilities workers to trick their way into peoples' homes. They are also designed to deter rogue traders, who charge householders exorbitant prices for work to their home or garden, who sell poor quality items at high prices or who pressure sell. Inspector Alastair Stenner, of North Cotswolds Inspector Neighbourhood Area, said: "Whilst it is not illegal for traders to sell goods by knocking on doors, householders can now take charge and make it known to traders that they do not want to deal with cold callers. "No Cold Calling Areas provide an opportunity for householders to collectively say 'No' to the practice of cold calling. "This scheme should help reduce the fear and threat that some homeowners feel when there is an unknown caller at the door."
