Homeowners Urged To Review SecurityHomeowners Urged To Review Security Now Before the Clocks Go BackPolice in the Cotswolds and Stroud Division are warning householders to take stock of their home security before the clocks go back next month. With the night's already drawing in earlier and the clocks going back one hour on October 28th many people will not get home until after dark. This provides house thieves with an easy opportunity to identify which homes are still empty because they are left in darkness. APS Mark Godsland, Crime Prevention Officer for the Cotswolds, said: "The change in the hour as winter approaches always coincides with a rise in the number of house and shed burglaries being reported. "Yet just a few simple precautions can drastically reduce householder's chances of becoming a victim. Burglars are always on the lookout for an easy target. "If a house appears to occupied then they are more than likely to move on until they find one in darkness. "It is very easy to purchase time switches from hardware shops and they are not expensive. These can be used on various pieces of electrical equipment as well as lights. "It is often a good idea to set a radio or television to come on as this increases the appearance of a house being occupied." He added that many crime prevention measures are just simple common sense. "Householders should take this chance before winter starts to step back and review their home security," he said. "They should look at fitting extra locks on their windows and doors and at external lighting. "It is also wise to make sure that all garden tools and furniture are put away, and that sheds and garages are secure. Thieves will often use tools taken from insecure outbuildings to try and break into a house. "If possible all tools and equipment should be kept in a security chest or cage in the shed to provide added protection. If you have a garage it also worthwhile putting your car away at night. "The extra night hours mean criminals have more time to work under cover of darkness and any steps householders can take to deter them should be done."
