Waste Team On The Road

Changes to the Cotswolds' waste and recycling service will be explained at a series of roadshows across the District starting next week.

The dates and venues are:

Monday, 5th November: Brewery Car Park, Cirencester, 9am to 3pm
Tuesday, 6th November: Forum Car Park, Cirencester, 9am to 3pm
Wednesday, 7th November: Waitrose, Cirencester, 9am to 3pm
Thursday, 8th November: Stow-on-the-Wold Farmers Market, Market Square, Stow, 9am to 1.30pm
Friday, 9th November: Tesco, Stow-on-the-Wold, 1pm to 7pm
Cotswold District Council has given the go-ahead for a new service which will be introduced from February 2008.

The changes include the introduction of a separate weekly collection of food waste for composting, the addition of card and cardboard to the materials that can be recycled at kerbside and the fortnightly collection of non-recyclable landfill waste in wheeled bins.

Garden waste will be collected weekly and householders choosing to have their garden waste collected will pay a small 30 annual charge per wheeled bin or 30 for a supply of 50 garden waste sacks. There will be a 50% discount for those in receipt of Council Tax benefit.

Council staff will be out and about in the District from next Monday (5th November) to explain how the new service will work and why the changes are being made.

Cllr Mark Tufnell, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: We are introducing an improved service which will give our residents the opportunity to recycle and compost much more of their waste.

"Gloucestershire's two landfill sites are set to be completely full by 2016 and the potential penalties under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme are significant. If we dont act now to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, it will be very expensive for the residents of this district."

Visitors to the roadshows will be urged to respond as quickly as possible to questionnaires about the new service which have been posted to every household.

The questionnaires need to be returned by Monday, 12th November, in order to ensure that residents receive the service that meets their needs.

"It's important residents fill in the reply form so that we know, for example, who wants to have their garden waste collected under the new service," Cllr Tufnell added.

The questionnaires can also be filled in online at www.cotswold.gov.uk/go/wastesurvey or by calling the waste hotline on 01285 623123.

The waste and recycling roadshow will be visiting other parts of the District over the coming weeks and months.
