Midsummer Start Date Announced For Waste Service

Cotswold District Council�s new waste and recycling collection service will be fully up and running from Monday, 23rd June.

The weekly collection of food waste and weekly charged-for collection of garden waste for composting began in April. Now, the Council is ready to introduce the final elements of the waste service redesign.

From 23rd June, the alternate weekly collection of non-recyclable household rubbish in Council-issued grey wheeled bins or beige bin bags will start right across the District, replacing the current weekly collection in black bin bags. The collection day will remain the same but the waste will be picked up fortnightly rather than weekly.

Residents will also be able to put out card and cardboard every fortnight for recycling in new reusable blue sacks from 23rd June. The fortnightly kerbside recycling box collection of paper, glass, cans and aerosols will continue as normal throughout.

Cllr Mark Tufnell, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: �I would like to thank the residents of the Cotswolds for their patience and tolerance following the delays in delivering out the bins for our new waste service.

�These delays were the result of the contractor underestimating the scale of the task in our large, rural District.

�The waiting is nearly over and we are now able to announce that the fully redesigned new waste service will start right across the District from Monday, 23rd June.�

The Council�s new weekly charged-for collection of garden waste for composting started in April and residents are now also able to put food waste out weekly for collection � either in their new food waste containers or emptied into green garden waste wheeled bins displaying valid annual licences.

The garden and food waste is then turned into high quality compost at a new facility called an In Vessel Composter.

�Thanks to our new service, thousands of tonnes of food waste and cardboard that would previously have been buried at landfill sites will now be composted or recycled,� added Cllr Tufnell.

�As a result, we are aiming to increase our recycling rate � already the best in Gloucestershire at 43% - to over 60%, which will make us one of the top performing local authorities in the whole of the UK.

�More importantly, we hope to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by a quarter, reflecting our commitment to creating a cleaner, greener Cotswold District.�

Around 320 households in and around the villages of Birdlip, Cowley and Coberley have already been receiving the full new waste service since early March.

As a result, the amount of rubbish sent to landfill from those three villages has been halved and their recycling rate has increased to 65%.

�If these figures are repeated across the District we will certainly have achieved the aims of the new service,� added Cllr Tufnell. �The vast majority of Cotswold residents are keen recyclers and we are confident that they will fully support our efforts.�

Postcards will be delivered soon to every household in the District giving details of how the waste and recycling collection service will be changing from 23rd June. Residents are reminded that all waste should be put out at kerbside by 7am on collection day.

The changes will also be explained at the following roadshows where residents can also take any unwanted plastic or metal dustbins, which will then be collected by the Council to be recycled.
