Since the 17th century, Tetbury has hosted the famous Woolsack Races. A test of strength, where individuals and teams compete to run up and down the 1 in 4 gradient of Gumstool Hill, in the Cotswold Market town of Tetbury, with a 60lb woolsack on their back.
Steeped in tradition, the event dates back to the 17th century, when it was originally run from the pub at the bottom of the hill (The Royal Oak) to the pub at the top of the hill (The Crown). Over the years the event has evolved, to contain numerous races, stalls, and entertainment. Traditionally held over the May long weekend, allowing visitors to come to Tetbury to compete, or enjoy the spectacle on the day.
The theme of the event is a Celebration of the Cotswolds, highlighting the history of the event, and showcasing local food, drink, businesses and entertainment.
The race will take place on Sun 26th May, over the holiday weekend. |
