West Oxfordshires Visitor Information Centres up for top award

West Oxfordshires Buford Visitor Information Centre and Witney Visitor Information Centre are in the running to be crowned the South Easts Tourism Information Service of the Year.

The VICs are two of five finalists shortlisted in Tourism South Easts Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2012.

The Awards recognise excellence, quality and innovation across all sectors of the tourism industry. The Tourism Information Service of the Year category recognises the role played by tourist information centres in helping to provide services for visitors.

Burford and Witney are run by West Oxfordshire District Council as part of its commitment to encouraging tourism in the District.

Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Communities and Culture, said: We are delighted that our VICs are finalists for this prestigious award. The Council recognises the importance of tourism to West Oxfordshire and is committed both to supporting the industry locally and encouraging more people to visit the area.

Our VICs are part of this work and it is great that they have both been recognised. We are looking forward to finding out who the winner is.

The three other finalists are: Thanet, Guildford and Rye Information Centres.

The winners will be announced on 28th November 2012.

Burford VIC was also recently recognised in a national awards scheme. This year it retained a silver rating in the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the UKs leading sustainable tourism certification scheme, in recognition of its eco-friendliness.
