Burford

Burford, 8 miles north of Lechlade, is a beautiful Cotswold town on the river Windrush which grew to be an important crossroads for travellers and a very wealthy wool town and has always been considered to be the gateway to the Cotswolds.

Burford High Street   The broad main street, High Street, slopes gently down to the river Windrush ("ford" was the Anglo Saxon word for "river crossing") and is lined with old Cotswold Stone houses and cottages. It is a very dignified street and many of the shops and buildings appear to have changed very little for hundreds of years.

There are many little side streets to explore and refreshments can be had at the many old pubs and tea rooms in the town. Antique shops are a common feature of the town.

Today it is extremely popular with visitors to the area and can get quite busy in the summer.

The 15th century parish church of St. John Baptist is a magnificent sight and is another sign of bygone riches based on wool in common with many other towns and villages in the area. The church was originally Norman, but it was remodelled in the fifteenth century.
